Cats Are Purrfect!

Why does my cat poop in the carrier when we go to the vet?

Everytime I take my cat to the vet she poops in the carrier. I think it is because she gets scared or something. She was abandonded with her kittens in the country so I think part of it might be anxiety. I asked my vet about it and all she said was that it sometimes happens and gave me no advice at all. What can I do to make her feel more at ease in the cat carrier?

Your first sentence probably says it all. Her trips in the carrier are trips to the vet. So the carrier is associated with something very scary. Just as it can happen with children who get very scared, it happens with your cat.

Sometimes, spraying Feliway in the carrier will calm her down for the trip.

Layers of newspapers in the carrier in the event of an accident is probably the best thing, and hope she doesn’t get it on her if she has an accident.

If you are able to leave the carrier out at all times, it may become less frightening to her. Or at least bring it out a week or so before her vet trip.

One of my kittens did that just after I put her in the car for the trip home after the vet trip. A rather aroma filled trip home, to say the least. I am sure she felt terrible about it, as cats are very fastidious.
