How can I stop my cat from biting and clawing me?

I adopted a 1-year-old stray male cat from the local Humane Society and thought he would make a great companion, but he has turned out to be a complete monster! When I pet him and give him attention he wraps his claws around my arm and bites me. He also follows me and repeats the same behavior when I’m walking around my apartment. I’ve provided him food, toys, and all the love and attention one could imagine, yet he still reverts to attacking me. I’ve considered using cat pheromone diffusers and sprays to cease his behavior or even adopting another cat for him to play around with, but it seems like those options will only be a temporary fix. Please help me, I don’t want to have to take him back to that awful place.

He might not like where you are petting him. Cats hate being patted on their stomachs, and many will not put up with being patted anywhere but on their throat; if you scratch him there and he really leans into it, that means he likes it. That might be something to try. He may interpret the way you are patting him as an attack and is just fighting back; why not let him make the advances for a couple of weeks, and see what he wants in the way of interaction? Cats are very different from dogs and you can’t “be the boss” with them like you can with dogs. I have found that being incredibly gentle with my cats, and letting them initiate contact, works the best, along with not touching them in ways they don’t like. Remember that you are way bigger than he is, and he can easily see you as a threat. Also make sure that no one else in your family is being rough with him….if so, there will be nothing you can do unless you can get them to stop and treat him gently.

The first part of my answer was in case you’re not an adult; if you are an adult, I got wonderful information from a book called The Tiger On Your Couch. It taught me how mother cats discipline their kittens, and I applied that to a feral cat I had. It took a month or so, but she quit attacking me and has been a wonderful companion for the last 18 years. She had been played very rough with by someone in her past, and it just took some time to re-train that out of her.
