American Shorthair – America’s All American Cat
When you are choosing your next cat why not fly the America patriotic flag and get Americas very own pure breed cat the American Shorthair ? There many breeds to choose from in America – each willhave its own unique history, appearance and temperament but none so specially home grown American as the Domestic Shorthair otherwise known as American Shorthair.
History records that the shorthair’s ancestors arrived from Europe on the Mayflower on it’s epic voyage to the new world with it’s working cats. Actual written records exist where the Jamestown colonists mention the cats living and working with them in 1609 as respected members of their society.
Ever since that time the cats have been doing a sterling job patrolling the houses farms and the stables of the growing nation. The beginning of the 20th Century saw the arrival on the American shores of foreign breeds posing a theat to the feisty native American Shorthairs. However breeders set about a selective breeeding programmes to preserve the beautiful and uniqueness of this cat that is now so admired.
The Cat Fanciers Association officially first recognised the Shorthair as a breed in it’s own right for the first time in 1904. The first registered cat of the reed was named Buster Brown but is was not until 1966 that the breed changed it’s own name from the Domestic Shorthair to the American Shorthair.
The cat is known for it’s gentle temperament, amiable disposition towarads dogs and children This puts it firmly on the leader board of Americas family pets. It is of a large medium size helthy and long lived.
It is a most wonderfully beautiful and playful breed that regularly enters the top ten cat list. Unbeleivably it comes in 80 colors but the most popular is the silver tabby with its tigerstripes over a clear silver backgroud coat and this accounts for over a third of all American Shorthairs. This is reflected in the fact they are often used in films and adverts.
However it should not be forgotten that this loyal and gentle cat has not forgotten it’s working roots and is a fierce hunter of rats and mice.
In short the American Shorthair could be exactly what you are looking for in your new companion.
